In this episode of Transform Hawaii Government's (THG) Digital Talk Story series, Executive Director Christine Sakuda speaks with Senator Jarrett Keohokalole about the importance of deploying broadband equitably and effectively across the Hawaiian Islands, technology’s critical role in our healthcare systems, and the state’s need to continue its momentum towards modernization.

Sen. Keohokalole serves District 24 which includes Kaneohe, MCBH, Kailua, Heeia, and Ahuimanu. He is chair of the Senate Committee on Health and serves on the Hawaiian Affairs, Judiciary, and Labor, Culture and the Arts committees.

In this Digital Talk Story, Sen. Keohokalole shared that one of the main priorities during the 2022 Legislative Session will be the deployment of broadband funding. He expressed that it is critical to ensure that federal funding is utilized effectively, including equitable distribution to rural areas that have limited access to the internet. This has been a major focus of the Broadband Hui, where THG continues to be a leader in this effort.

Sen. Keohokalole also discussed technology’s important role in our healthcare systems, especially during the pandemic. With everyone spending more time at home, Hawaii saw a large increase in the adoption of various telehealth services. He says the momentum needs to continue toward this effort in a way that will reduce costs, provide better access, and better outcomes for the public. He affirmed that these discussions will be taking place during the legislative session and beyond, and that there are many opportunities for progress to happen.

We look forward to continue monitoring the 2022 Legislative Session with a keen eye on these priorities.

THG extends its appreciation to Sen. Keohokalole for taking the time to join us for our Digital Talk Story series.
